Welcome to Badger’s Bible Project!
Begining now, I’m going to be doing a series of articles about the “good” book. I’ll be reading through it and posting my thoughts as I go. This is inspired by the “Blogging the Bible” series at slate.com.
In that series, the author went through the entire Old Testament, logging comments as he went. He is, however, Jewish, and so wrote from that angle. I’m an atheist, so I’ll be writing about the Bible from an atheist perspective.
For this project, I am using a copy of the New King James Version of the Bible produced by Thomas Nelson Publishers. It’s one of two that I have at home, and the only one I felt like marking up with a highlighter. Interestingly, I found it by the side of the road. Some people might call that a sign. Given that it was right outside the church, I call it a sign of someone leaving it on the roof of their car and driving off.
I’ve been meaning to read the entire Bible this year. Know thine enemy, and all that. At last I’ve finally found something I think will help me to do so!
A couple notes on style here. I’m not going to use the italics most editions of the Bible use. Apparently they are there to indicate things not in the original text, but I don’t see the point to using them, so I won’t. Plus it’s extra effort.
Also, I will not be capitalizing pronouns with God, but I will when using the word “Man” to refer to our species. So when the verse says:
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. – Genesis 1:27
I will type it as:
So God created Man in his own image; in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. – Genesis 1:27
I don’t think these are unreasonable stylistic choices.
I’m putting in a lot of effort on this, and really hoping for lots of feedback! Please let me know what you think!

I think this is a great idea, Chris. I look forward to reading all of your posts.
By the way, I’ve done that several times (left my Bible on top of the roof while leaving church – maybe you got mine?)

Hehe… it’s entirely possible… if you lived in Palm Springs.
This sort of thing makes me glad I don’t drive. I would be most vexed were I to leave something I value on the top of my car.
I hope you find the articles interesting. If nothing else, I’d love to hear the opinions of someone with a different set of religious beliefs than those I have (or don’t).
