Jesse Helms has died. One of the most well-known anti-gay bigots out there has finally kicked the bucket after 86 years of being alive. In true over-the-top patriotic fashion, he died on the Fourth of July.
I have nothing good to say about Helms. He caused a great deal of damage to the gay rights movement in this country and did no favors for people with AIDS. Just look at some of the controversies that swarmed around this guy. I suppose really the only positive thing I can say is that he probably represented well the views of his constiuency, though I don’t believe that’s a good thing.
Either way, one less asshole in the world for us to deal with.
