Blast from the Past

There’s a movie people of a certain age likely saw several times in school when they were growing up. Probably they read the book that went with the movie, and many probably also had the record based around it. Along with “Schoolhouse Rock”, this is something that had a huge impact on a whole generation. When I tell you the title, you’ll remember, and likely hear several of the songs in your mind.

Free to Be… You and Me

When I was a kid growing up in small-town America, I remember seeing this movie several times. I remember being in the library at Lacey Elementary and watching it. It was in the days before VCR’s, mind you. We’re talking around 1978, maybe 1979. Rather than VCR’s we had projectors made by a company called Eiki. It wasn’t the best sound, but it worked and carried kids like me off to a place where you could be yourself, where you didn’t have to conform to what everyone else thought you needed to be. If you were a boy named William and you liked your doll, that was fine! As long as you were happy, that was what mattered most.

It’s been 35 years since Free to Be… You and Me first came out. Now there’s an updated version which you can buy by clicking here. The stories are the same, but the illustrations and presentation are more modern. You can also see an interview with Marlo Thomas, the woman behind the franchise, here.

If you’re a parent, I can hardly recommend something better for you to buy for your children.
