I live in Phoenix, Arizona. It is, believe it or not, the fifth largest city by population in the United States. That comes as a surprise to most people, who don’t realize just how freaking big this city actually is! Even to people here it doesn’t quite seem to have sunk in. What makes me say this?
Well, I’m watching my local news and they’re teasing a story that somehow ties in Phoenix with the upcoming film Angels and Demons (review on Friday).
Now the film wasn’t shot here, doesn’t take place here, and from what I’ve read of the book, doesn’t have anything to do with Phoenix or Arizona, but our city is still very insecure and doesn’t seem to realize how big we are now, and how important (important enough that even as I type this, the President is landing).
I’m betting New York, Los Angeles and Chicago don’t feel the need to do news stories trying to create some artificial tie between a major national news story. I’m betting that they’re cool enough to understand, “Yeah, hey, we’re us. We don’t need anything else.”
Oh, well. Maybe at some point down the line we’ll stop trying to do that ourselves. Meantime, I’ll just sit back, chuckle and roll my eyes every time we do.
