Some Thoughts on “Asylum of the Daleks”

Warning: Significant spoilers follow

I liked it quite a bit, actually. I liked the idea that Rory and Amy are having relationship issues, because people in the real world have those problems. I liked the idea of the Daleks thinking of the Doctor as a predator of Daleks. I really enjoyed the concept of seeing various past Dalek styles, even though with the lighting it was hard to tell them apart, and the idea of a Dalek prison makes no sense as we’ve seen them kill each other many times.

I was also fascinated by the fact that Oswin was played by the same actress who is playing the series’ new companion. I really, really hope it doesn’t wind up being the same character, but the actress did a good job and I look forward to seeing her on the show again. I also couldn’t help but notice that the colors on the opening credits looked really off. Hopefully that will get fixed.

This said, I can’t help but notice an odd little continuity error. The Doctor said he’d killed all the Time Lords and all the Daleks back during the end of the Time War. That being the case, how can there be older-style Daleks in the Asylum? It’s a minor nitpick, but it’s still there.

Anyhow, a worthy effort, and now I’m looking forward to next week’s episode, which apparently involves dinosaurs on some sort of vehicle.

I really DISLIKED the relationship part of the episode. You can tell the writers are really taking into account the female influence on the sci fi market sector. If I wanna see people fucking boo hoo I’ll watch Lifetime or the fucking Hallmark channel. Back in the old days, sci fi was for dudes and it was full of monsters and we never met the parents of the companions nor delved into their relationships and we didn’t care. Now it’s all weepy and sappy, it’s stupid. I like the new companion she is SUPER DUPER cute and I hope she’s still a hacker that’s cool. I don’t like that Amy talks back to the Doctor; that’s so non cannon. The fact that Oswin was a Dalek and in a dream world was a cool twist.

Enjoyed seeing the Daleks back but I thought it would have been better if they had used two episodes for the story, it just seemed over to quick.
