    Yes, the Badger’s abolitionist great-great-great grandfather owned land in Kansas just four miles from pro-slavery Missouri, and just seven miles from a cabin owned by John Brown. From the mid-1850s until the Civil War, Kansas was at the heart of the bloody battle over slavery. “Bleeding Kansas” and its history gave us the terms bushwacker and jayhawker — those who supported or opposed slavery, respectively.
