Marcia Wallace, best known to me at least as the voice of Edna Krabappel/Flanders in The Simpsons, has died of breast cancer at the age of 70. She is the first of the “not quite principle, but close enough” cast members to die.
Wallace was on a great deal of TV back in the 1960s and 1970s, and rose to fame initially appearing on The Bob Newhart show. It was there that most people came to recognize her and her distinctive voice. Later, as production was beginning on the TV series of The Simpsons she was cast to voice Bart’s much overworked and under-appreciated teacher.
The producers of the show have announced that Mrs. Krabappel will be retired from the series. I’ll be interested to see how that works. In the meantime, at least we have some great moments of hers to look back on.
